Barbie first saw the light of day in 1959 and has since been a big part of most girls’ lives at some stage of their growing up.
Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie, realized that there was a gap in the market for adult dolls as pretending about the future was a part of the growing up process. Before Barbie, most dolls were children or babies.
At first there was an outcry from many mothers, saying that Barbie was too sexy and not suitable for young girls. This did not stop Mattel form marketing them and soon Barbie became a household name. Today Barbie is one of the longest living toys in the world and she is still going strong.
