Batman is a fictional character whose story has been retold and adapted several times since 1939 when he first appeared in Detective Comics #27.

The story of Batman begins when young Bruce Wayne witnesses his mother and father being murdered over some petty cash outside a movie theatre in Gotham City. Bruce is only 8 years old when this happens and he makes an oath to rid the city of the evil that had taken his parents' lives. He quickly realises that he cannot do this as Wayne, but need a disguise so he can strike terror into the hearts of the criminals. He decides he needs to be a creature of the night and at this moment a bat happens to fly through his window, giving Wayne the idea of Batman.

Wayne is left with a huge mansion and a butler Alfred who helps Wayne to become Batman. As a grown man Wayne takes in an orphaned circus acrobat, Dick Grayson, who becomes his sidekick, Robin.

Batman and Robin are not like most other super heroes, they do not possess any superpowers, instead they are both extremely intelligent, have great physical prowess, excellent martial arts abilities, super detective skills, the science and technology to help, vast wealth to pay for anything, the knack of intimidation, and an indomitable will to see it through to the end.

Some of the greatest villain that Batman has fought counts Poison Ivy, Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face and Joker.
Several known actors has played Batman, among these are Lewis Wilson, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck.

Batman is an American cultural icon that has been licensed and adapted into a variety of media. There are numerous of merchandise sold all over the world, such as toys and video games. In 2014 for the 75th anniversary of Batman a very distinct fragrance for men was launched under the name Batman Begins.
